Tatuaż odgrywa dużą rolę w niektórych społecznościach. Ludzie używają swojego ciała jako płótna artystycznego, aby
odzwierciedlić ich status, ideologię, pamiętne historie itp.
Dla plemienia Tharu w Chitwan (Nepal) kobiece tatuaże to była rzecz niemal święta. Dziś już praktyka tatuowania kobiet w tym rejonie zanikła, ale te "ostatnie" kobiety wciąż dumnie prezentują rysunki na ciele.
Przekazywane są trzy różne historie ich powstania:
Pierwszy historia dotyczy porwań. W dawnych czasach dziewczyny z plemienia Tharu, aby nie zostać niewolnicami królewskiego rodu zaczęły używać tatuaży jako formy deformacji ciała.
Drugi historia mówi iż tatuaż był obowiązkowy dla nastoletnich dziewczynek, albo będą one odseparowane od rodziny i społeczności. Nie będą mogły rozmawiać, poślubić, a nawet dotykać przedmiotów, których używają inni ludzie. Ślad atramentu na ciele to forma akceptacji przez plemię.
Trzeci historia dotyczy piękna i życia pozagrobowego. Gdy kobieta Tharu umrze, odrodzi się w niebie w swojej najpiękniejszej formie.

For the Tharu tribe in Chitwan, a Nepalese town, Omar Reda found that the women tattoos have 3 different stories.
The first one: to stop kidnapping. The girls got inked in order to deform themselves.
The second one. Tattooing used to be mandatory for a girl during the teenage phase, or she will be estranged from her family and community. She won’t be allowed to talk, marry, and even people won’t be allowed to take anything she touched like food and objects. She must get inked in order to be accepted by her people.
The third one was about beauty and the afterlife. Once a woman dies, she will rise in heaven in her most beautiful form.
